Stock market holiday: Will NSE and BSE remain closed for Bakri Eid this week?

Stock markets are set for a shortened trading week, with the National Stock Exchange and BSE scheduled to remain closed on Thursday, May 28, on account of Bakri Eid.This will be the second trading holiday in May after markets remained shut earlier this month on May 1 for Maharashtra Day.The holiday means equity, equity derivatives and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments on both exchanges will remain closed for the day.

Seven more market holidays left in 2026

Stock exchanges have a total of 16 scheduled holidays in 2026, out of which eight have already been observed. After the Bakri Eid closure, the next stock market holiday will fall on June 26 for Muharram. In the second half of the year, trading will also remain suspended on:

  • September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi
  • October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti
  • October 20 for Dussehra
  • November 10 for Diwali Balipratipada
  • November 24 for Guru Nanak Jayanti
  • December 25 for Christmas

Four major holidays in 2026 fall on weekends and therefore will not lead to additional market closures. These include Independence Day on August 15 and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8.Despite Diwali Laxmi Pujan falling on a Sunday this year, stock exchanges are expected to conduct the customary Muhurat Trading session on November 8.The exact timings for the special one-hour trading session will be announced closer to the date.

MCX to reopen for evening session

India’s largest commodity exchange, Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), will remain closed during the morning session on May 28 but will resume trading in the evening session.MCX has announced 16 trading holidays for 2026 involving either partial or full closures.Meanwhile, National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) will remain shut for both trading sessions on Thursday.
