Schools to adopt composite skill labs as CBSE aligns curriculum with NCF-SE 2023 framework

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education has directed affiliated schools to establish Composite Skill Labs as part of efforts to strengthen skill-based education. The move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, where vocational learning forms a mandatory component of schooling. The directive follows Circular No. Skill-75/2024, which outlines requirements for infrastructure, timelines, and implementation. Schools have been instructed to integrate practical learning environments to support the development of competencies alongside academic instruction.Infrastructure requirements and lab structureSchools are required to set up either one Composite Skill Lab measuring 600 square feet for Classes VI to XII, or two separate labs of 400 square feet each. In the two-lab model, one facility is designated for Classes VI to X, and the other for Classes XI to XII.The labs are intended to provide space for hands-on, activity-based learning across multiple skill sectors. The facilities must ensure accessibility, safety standards, and adaptability to accommodate varied vocational subjects and student needs.Timeframe for compliance and affiliation criteriaIt is compulsory for all schools applying for new affiliation that they establish their composite skill laboratories. They should have a laboratory fully equipped as one of the criteria of the affiliation process. Those schools which already have the affiliation status have been granted three years’ time from the date of issuance of this circular. The deadline fixed by the Board has been set as August 22, 2027. During this period, the installation has to be done using appropriate equipment and machinery.Theory vs. PracticeThis step will help in building practical capabilities among the students by connecting their theoretical knowledge with actual applications. These labs would also facilitate multidisciplinary learning, enabling students to perform activities that encompass subject-based knowledge. It is hoped that this initiative would foster employability and vocational readiness among learners.Guidelines and framework for implementationGuidelines pertaining to infrastructure, equipment, safety standards, and other relevant issues have been laid out in detail by CBSE. The list of lab equipment mentioned herein is only indicative, and each school can choose to include equipment according to its own needs. It is imperative upon the heads of all schools to take appropriate steps for creating and utilizing these labs in an efficient manner.
