CBSE Class 12 results 2026: Girls leave boys behind again, outscore them by nearly 7 percentage points

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the Class 12th result 2026 on the official website, cbse.gov.in. Approximately, 17,80,365 students registered for the Class 12 board examinations this year, while 17,68,968 appeared. Out of them, 15,07,109 students successfully cleared the examination. At the same time, 1,63,800 students were placed in the compartment category, accounting for 9.26% of all candidates who appeared for the examinations. These students will now be eligible to appear for compartment examinations to improve their results. Students who have appeared for the exam can move to the official website, DigiLocker or UMANG app to download the scorecards. Girls have once again outperformed boys. Girls recorded a pass percentage of 88.86%, sharply ahead of boys at 82.13%, creating a gender gap of 6.73 percentage points.

Girls maintain academic edge

According to CBSE figures, girls continued to outperform boys by a wide margin, even though their pass percentage declined from 91.64% last year to 88.86% this year. Boys too witnessed a fall, dropping from 85.70% in 2025 to 82.13% in 2026.The board’s data showed that the performance gap between girls and boys remained substantial, underlining the sustained academic dominance of girl students in the senior secondary examinations.

Transgender candidates once again achieved a 100% pass percentage

The statistics come at a time when education experts have repeatedly pointed to changing classroom trends, improved participation of girls in higher secondary education, and stronger consistency in board examination performance among female students.

No toppers list announced

CBSE did not release any official merit list, saying the decision was aimed at preventing unhealthy academic competition among students. However, the board stated that merit certificates would be issued through DigiLocker to the top 0.1% students in each subject. The Class 12 results are considered crucial for undergraduate admissions across universities in India and abroad, making the gender-wise performance data a closely watched indicator every year.
