Harvard asks donors to endow $10 million professorships for ‘viewpoint diversity’ push

Harvard University is seeking large donations to fund new endowed professorships as part of an effort to expand viewpoint diversity across its faculty, according to The Harvard Crimson. The University has approached donors with proposals for gifts of up to $10 million each to support new faculty positions. The broader campaign is expected to raise several hundred million dollars and could fund dozens of new hires if completed. The initiative is being led by Harvard Provost John F. Manning, who has been in discussions with donors for several months. University officials have presented the plan as an effort to broaden ideological representation across departments, people familiar with the matter said.A Harvard spokesperson said the University is in “ongoing conversations with a variety of members of the University community about how best to advance viewpoint diversity on Harvard’s campus,” according to Crimson.“Potential approaches continue to evolve through these discussions,” the spokesperson said.

Integrated hiring model under discussion

Under the proposed model, new faculty would not be placed in a separate institute. Instead, they would be appointed at the University level and distributed across existing schools and departments. The approach marks a shift from earlier discussions about creating a standalone center focused on conservative scholarship. Previous proposals had drawn comparisons to Hoover Institution at Stanford University.People familiar with the planning said Manning began discussing the idea informally last year, including at alumni events. Since then, Harvard officials have continued outreach to donors through meetings and events in multiple cities.Harvard President Alan M. Garber has also been involved in donor engagement, including meetings earlier this year.

Donor response and funding challenges

The fundraising effort has faced questions from some donors over its scale. According to a person familiar with the discussions, the overall target has been revised more than once.University officials have reached out to donors across the political spectrum. The initiative has been framed broadly as an academic effort rather than a politically aligned project.

Context of political and internal pressure

The effort comes amid continued debate over ideological representation within Harvard’s faculty. The issue gained attention during the administration of Donald Trump, which called for greater viewpoint diversity at universities. In April 2025, federal officials urged Harvard to review faculty composition and hire more professors in departments seen as lacking ideological balance.Garber rejected the federal demands at the time, but discussions around faculty composition have continued.Internal surveys have shown that a majority of Harvard faculty identify as liberal. In the most recent Faculty of Arts and Sciences survey, more than 60 percent of respondents reported liberal views. The same survey indicated limited support for targeted hiring to increase ideological diversity. Only 23 percent of respondents supported such efforts.

Calls for change within the University

Some faculty members have publicly supported increasing ideological diversity. Harvey C. Mansfield, a government professor, wrote last year that Harvard should expand the presence of conservative scholars.University task forces examining campus climate issues have also recommended steps to promote pluralism, including the possibility of a central initiative. Harvard has not announced a formal plan based on those recommendations.

Next steps remain unclear

University officials have not provided a timeline for the initiative or details on how new faculty positions would be allocated.Discussions with donors are ongoing, and the structure of the programme continues to develop.
