India works on preferential access for its goods in US

NEW DELHI: India is working to see how it can get preferential access for its products in the US, with a delegation led by chief negotiator Darpan Jain reaching Washington for talks. “We have almost finalised the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement. We are trying to work out what would be the mechanism by which India can get a preferential market access in the US market compared to our competitors,” commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal told reporters. The development comes after the Trump administration imposed a 10% tariff on all countries from Feb 24, which can be in place for 150 days, and is working on alternatives to levy country-specific duties to replace the reciprocal tariffs that were declared illegal by the US Supreme Court. In a post on X, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said, “The Indian trade delegation will be arriving in Washington this week. A great step to finalise our bilateral trade deal. A win-win for both nations.”
