Young talent takes centre stage at Northeast Navodaya chess and yoga championship
Students shine at NVS Shillong Region chess and yoga meet in Assam

GUWAHATI: The Northeast regional Chess and Yoga Meet, hosted by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Rangia in Kamrup, brought together young talent from more than 100 JNVs across the Northeast to compete in events testing both mental and physical skills.The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti Shillong Region Chess & Yoga Meet 2026 was held from April 26 to 28 as a three-day programme where students competed in mind and body disciplines, promoting concentration, strategy, physical fitness, and sportsmanship. A total of 260 selected students from 106 JNVs under the Shillong Region took part.Chess competitions were held in six categories: Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 for both boys and girls. Yoga events included individual, artistic pair, rhythmic pair, and group performances for boys and girls.The meet was inaugurated by chief guest Sister B. D’Costa, Principal of Fatima Convent English School, Rangia.In her address, the chief guest said chess sharpens the mind while yoga strengthens the body, and encouraged students to uphold discipline and fair play. The programme also featured a march-past by contingents from all 106 schools, an oath-taking ceremony, and a short yoga demonstration by the host school. Anjana, Principal of JNV Rangia, welcomed the gathering and formally declared the meet open.Competitions were conducted according to SGFI and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti norms.“Trained arbiters and certified yoga judges ensured smooth conduct. The spirit of competition was high, yet marked by camaraderie and mutual respect among participants,” said Anjana.At the closing ceremony, Mridusmita Borah, Co-District Commissioner, Rangia, attended as the chief guest, while Seshanuj Sarkar, Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya Rangia, was the guest of honour.Top performers in each category were chosen to represent the Shillong Region at the NVS National Chess & Yoga Meet 2026.The closing function opened with a welcome song and a cultural performance. The chief guest congratulated all participants and stressed the importance of sports in building resilience and unity. Medals, trophies, and certificates were distributed during the prize ceremony, and the overall championship trophies for chess and yoga were also awarded.
